Trekking the Dolomites: An Italian Mountain Excursion

High in the northern Alps the soaring jagged spires of 18 peaks spear askew into the doming sky. This geographic phenomenon has been dubbed ‘The Dolomites’ after the 18^th-century geologist Dieudonné Dolomieu.

The scenery in The Dolomites are so wholly individual that in 2009 the entire area received UNESCO status for featuring “some of the most beautiful mountain landscapes anywhere, with vertical walls, sheer cliffs and a high density of narrow, deep and long valleys.”

The best way to see The Dolomites high-altitude peaks, expansive glaciers and stomach-dropping valleys? On foot of course*. Weave along forested trails, cliff-side paths and alpine meadows by day, while enjoying the serenity and absolute quiet of the area by night, from the comfort of a mountain-nested lodge.
