About this Journey

In Ningxia, the old meets the new, the East meets the West, and lush wetlands along the Yellow River meet the vast Gobi Desert. From the capital Yinchuan, explore one of China’s most exciting wine regions, where ideal conditions have transformed the landscape into a rising star of the global wine industry.

Your WildChina Expert

Kiki Chen

After studying and living in four countries, Kiki returned to her home province of Ningxia and immersed herself in its burgeoning wine industry. She began as a translator for wineries, guiding high-

level foreign dignitaries, leading vineyard tours, and explaining the winemaking process. Over time, she developed expert knowledge of Ningxia’s wines and founded NingxiaWine.com to help visitors explore the region’s vineyards. Kiki holds a master’s degree in Comparative Local Development and is pursuing WSET (Wine and Spirit Education Trust) certification, contributing to Ningxia’s growing wine sector in a sustainable way. Passionate about education, she has organized a non-profit summer camp for local children for the past eight years, bringing together volunteers from ten different countries. An avid language learner, she speaks fluent Spanish, English, and Mandarin, and has traveled to more than 40 countries.

What we love
  • Exploring a varied selection of wineries and meeting the people behind Ningxia’s viticultural reinvention
  • Spending a night at the impressive Xige Estate, home to one of the most modern wine-producing facilities in the region
  • Discovering authentic regional cuisine alongside celebrated wines

Itinerary

Day 1Arrive in Yinchuan

First Stop: Yinchuan

Yinchuan, meaning “silver river,” is the capital of Ningxia. The Yellow River running through the center of the city and the Helan Mountains to the west provide a welcome respite from the arid climate drifting in from the nearby Gobi Desert. This combination makes the surrounding countryside ideal for vineyards, with grapevines winding up trellises that stretch towards the Helan peaks. In the city, students and locals go about their day amidst towering mosques, ancient pagodas, and modern skyscrapers.

Arrive: Yinchuan

Meet your WildChina guide at the airport arrivals hall and transfer by private vehicle to your hotel.

Day 2Yinchuan

Western Xia Imperial Tombs

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Western Xia Imperial Tombs encompass nine mausoleums and 250 tombs from the Tangut-founded Western Xia dynasty (1038–1227). Of the many towering earth mounds spread across the site, only a fraction have been excavated, leaving much of their history shrouded in mystery.

Legacy Peak Estate

One of China’s oldest vineyards, Legacy Peak’s vines have been growing for nearly two decades. The estate began when Liu senior received land for erosion control and planted grapes to stabilize the sandy soil. Their first Cabernet Sauvignon launched in 2011, and their wines now win awards worldwide.

Kanaan Winery
Meet owner Wang Fang — “Crazy Fang” — whose daring approach transformed Ningxia’s wine scene. Producing Riesling here was once thought impossible, but she proved it could be done, creating a distinctive, award-winning wine.

Meals included: breakfast

Day 3Yinchuan

Wine Tasting at Domaine Pushang

Run by a husband-and-wife team, Domaine Pushang is celebrated for its Marselan wines, a varietal rising to prominence in Ningxia. Though small in scale, it is ranked as a “fourth growth” vineyard by the Ningxia wine bureau.

Qingtongxia Yellow River Canyon

The Yellow River Grand Canyon is carved by the wide flow of the Yellow River, flanked by limestone and sand-shale mountains. Witness modern engineering at the Soviet-style hydropower dam, then continue to a tribute to traditional China — a 108-pagoda temple built into the side of a mountain along the riverbank.

Boat Ride on the Yellow River

Cruise along the Yellow River for close-up views of the canyon walls and surrounding scenery, as your guide shares the geological history that shaped this dramatic landscape.

Wine Tasting at Xige Estate

Settle in for the evening at the dramatic Xige Estate, home to one of Ningxia’s most modern wine-producing facilities. Appreciate the entirety of the estate’s distinctive design during a guided tour of the winery and taste its classics.

Stay overnight at the on-site vineyard hotel at Xige Estate.

Meals included: breakfast

Day 4Depart from Yinchuan

Wine Tasting at Silver Heights Winery

Silver Heights is a family-owned winery led by founder Emma Gao. The estate embraces organic farming and follows the ancient Chinese agricultural principles of Jieqi.

Domain Chandon Wine Tasting

Moët Hennessy’s Domain Chandon blends international sophistication with local tastes to create wines popular in China and abroad. Established in Ningxia in 2013, it produced China’s first sparkling red wine, Chandon Xi.
