Embark on a legendary adventure into the heart of Yunnan, where the mighty Jinsha River, with relentless power, has sculpted one of the world’s most dramatic and profound natural wonders: the Tiger Leaping Gorge. Here, between the towering Yulong and Haba Snow Mountains, legend whispers of a tiger’s daring leap across the gorge’s narrowest point, forever etching its name into the landscape. The sheer scale of the gorge is awe-inspiring, with cliffs rising almost vertically from the roaring river below.
These imposing cliffs, once a vital artery of the ancient Tea Horse Road, resonated with the rhythmic clatter of horse hooves and the distant jingle of bells, a crucial passage for caravans laden with precious tea and salt. Today, the Upper Trail invites adventurers to follow in these historic footsteps, offering unparalleled immersion into a landscape where snow-capped peaks, sheer rock faces, and the powerful Jinsha River converge.
Beyond the gorge lies Shangri-La, a mystical land steeped in Tibetan culture. Explore the vibrant Dongzulin Temple along the bending Jinsha river, and wander the ancient streets of Dukezong. From the thrilling heights of Tiger Leaping Gorge to the cultural richness of Shangri-La and Lijiang, this Yunnan adventure offers stunning beauty and a journey through time.
Yunnan Province—which literally means “South of the Clouds” due to its location just south of the Tibetan Plateau—is home to some of the most diverse cultures, ecology, and terrain in China. With verdant low-lying valleys, spectacular white-capped mountains, rustic towns and villages, and a lively mix of ethnic minority communities, Yunnan has long inspired poets and travelers alike.
The city of Lijiang lies in the shadow of Yulong Snow Mountain and has entranced visitors for centuries with its singular architecture, quaint bridges, and narrow canals. Although Lijiang has transformed from its quaint roots into a tourist hub, there are still quieter side lanes to explore that hold encounters with Lijiang’s Naxi residents who depend on the mountain water that flows through the town’s canals. Classified as a World Heritage Site in 1997, Lijiang is a charming home base for accessing Yunnan’s authentic and lesser-known communities.
Today is the day, the start of your WildChina adventure. Step off the plane in Lijiang and meet your local WildChina guide in the airport arrivals hall. They’ll be waiting to welcome you and will have your private vehicle on standby, ready to take you to your hotel for check-in.
Spend the afternoon immersing into the process of crafting Pu’er tea cakes at an ancient city tea house. These cakes were the most important transported goods on the Ancient Tea Horse Road, a Yunnan specialty pressed since the Tang Dynasty for transport to Tibet, becoming essential for butter tea. Participate in the traditional craft, meticulously packing, weighing, steaming, and shaping loose tea. Through wrapping, kneading, and stone grinding, a personalized Pu’er tea cake is meticulously crafted.
Deepen the afternoon’s experience in the ancient city tea house by engaging with the descendants of the legendary Tea Horse Road caravan leaders. Listen as they share their families’ compelling histories, revealing how humble tea forged an epic route and shaped a vibrant culture. Discover the untold tales of bravery, unity, and poignant farewells that defined these pioneering lives. This intimate exchange offers a rare window into Lijiang’s enduring heritage and the human spirit that navigated ancient trade.
As evening descends upon Lijiang’s ancient town, an authentic local dinner awaits. The historic streets come alive with soft lights and the aroma of traditional Naxi cuisine. Enjoy fresh, seasonal ingredients amidst the unique ambiance of this ancient setting, offering a perfect conclusion to the day before retreating back to the hotel for some well-deserved rest.
Meals included: dinner
Legend has it that whilst fleeing a hunter through the mountains of northern Yunnan, a tiger leapt across the raging rapids blocking its escape. This is how Tiger Leaping Gorge got its name, but its reputation comes from epic hiking trails shared with local shepherds and farmers that deliver views of outstanding natural beauty below. The hike is not for the fainthearted, after all, this is one of the deepest gorges in the world at 3,790 meters deep.
After enjoying breakfast at the hotel, begin the day with a 1h drive to the starting point of the Tiger Leaping Gorge Upper Trail: the Naxi Family Guesthouse. This revered site holds deep significance as a sacred place for the Naxi people, where a “mountain god altar” once stood for prayers of peace and protection. From this symbolic origin, embark on a trekking challenge, mirroring the ancient horse caravans who set out on their arduous journeys.
As you begin the hike and catch your first glimpse of the valley stretching out below, cut in the center by the Jinsha River, it will be hard to imagine that the most beautiful – and the most grueling – sections of your hike are still to come. Ahead are the 28 Bends, a set of steep switchbacks whose only respite is found in commanding views of snowcapped summits. After the Bends, where the trail settles into its new altitude, you’ll catch your breath at the Tea and Horse Guesthouse, your first real vistas spread out at your feet.
After conquering the challenging 28 Bends, relax at the Tea and Horse Guesthouse with a brewed cup of coffee or tea, while enjoying the majestic views of Yulong Snow Mountain as sunset approaches. As dusk falls, settle into the comfort of the hotel to recharge for the journey ahead.
Your luggage will be transported to the next stop. We suggest you pack a day pack with water and snacks for the hike.
Depending on time, a simple lunch will be provided either at Tea Horse Guesthouse or on the hike.
Meals included: breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Today will be less challenging as we continue the hike for five hours on primarily flat or downward paths to the lower section of Tiger Leaping Gorge. Best to bring a set of hiking poles, as it will be a consistent, and sometimes steep climb down the canyon. Enjoy the opportunity to observe the passing scenery, as well as cross a cascading waterfall. We will rest and have lunch at Tina’s guesthouse before transferring to Daju Village for overnight.
The ride from Tina’s Guesthouse to Daju Village will take around 30 minutes.
A historic Tea Horse Road hub, Daju Village in Lijiang retains its authentic Naxi charm. Rammed earth homes nestle amidst terraced fields, while ancient walnut trees bear witness to muleteer history. After exploring Tiger Leaping Gorge, a traditional Naxi courtyard by the river offers stunning views of the gorge and Jinsha River from its mountain terrace. Fruit-laden fields surround, and the scent of stone-grilled meat fills the air.
Your luggage will be transported to the next stop. We suggest you pack a day pack with water and snacks for the hike.
Meals included: breakfast, lunch, and dinner
The ride from Daju Village to Shangri-la will take around 2.5 hours.
Known as Gyalthang in Tibetan, the city of Zhongdian, was officially rechristened ‘Shangri-La’ after the mythical paradise described in James Hilton’s Lost Horizon. Located on a broad valley on the Tibetan Plateau at an altitude of 3,200 meters, surrounded by snow-capped peaks, primeval forests, and lakes, the town was a gateway to the historic Tibetan province of Kham and an important station for trade caravans along the Ancient Tea and Horse Caravan Trail. Today, it remains an important center for Yunnan’s Tibetan community.
Upon arrival, time will be allotted for you to acclimate to the thin air and high altitude.
Experience the ancient Tibetan tradition of crafting colorful prayer flags in the heart of Shangri-La. Learn about the meaning behind each color and symbol, and try your hand at printing your own flags with blessings for peace, compassion, and good fortune. This hands-on activity connects you with local culture and leaves you with a meaningful keepsake to carry home.
With more than 1300 years of history, Dukezong is an old Tibetan town also known as the ‘footstep of Shangri-La’, and was once a key stop in the Ancient Tea-Horse Road.
