Deep in the mountains of Guizhou, Huanggang Dong Village prepares for its most sacred celebration. As the Hantian Festival approaches, the village transforms—families craft ritual offerings, elders rehearse ancient songs, and the air fills with the scent of woodsmoke and fermenting rice wine. This is more than observation; it’s full immersion into a living culture where polyphonic singing echoes through wooden drum towers, Lusheng dancers swirl in vibrant traditional dress, and community bonds are strengthened through shared ritual and feast. From the intimate preparations that stretch late into the night to the dawn ceremonies honoring ancestors, this journey offers rare access to one of China’s most authentic ethnic minority celebrations—where tradition isn’t performed, but lived.

The Guizhou cultural adventure begins with arrival in Guiyang, capital of this mountainous province renowned for its ethnic minority heritage. A WildChina guide will meet you at the airport for a scenic drive through dramatic karst landscapes and terraced rice fields to Huanggang Dong Village. This remote settlement is home to the Dong people, famous for their wooden drum towers, indigo textiles, and mesmerizing polyphonic singing.
Experience the most exciting part of the festival—the preparations. Spend the day documenting Huanggang as it transforms for the Hantian celebration. Watch families prepare ritual offerings, elders rehearse sacred songs, and women weave traditional costumes. Photograph the iconic drum tower, meet local Dong musicians including female singers and their teacher, and witness traditional Pipa performances. In the evening, the village buzzes with energy. Villagers work late into the night decorating, practicing their renowned choir songs, and cooking elaborate feasts. This behind-the-scenes access reveals the deep community bonds that define Dong culture.
Immerse yourself in the full Hantian Festival experience. Begin at dawn with shamans performing ancient rituals as families present offerings to honor ancestors. The village square fills with extraordinary Dong polyphonic singing. Watch Lusheng dancers in vibrant dress parade through stone alleys, join a long table banquet with local families, and participate in fish-catching in rice paddies and dumpling-making workshops. As night falls, gather around the drum tower for a bonfire celebration where songs echo into the mountains—an unforgettable immersion into living Dong tradition.
Extend your ethnic minority exploration with a visit to Biasha Miao Village, known as China’s last gun-bearing tribe. Discover their preserved customs including distinctive topknot hairstyles, traditional wooden architecture, and ceremonial firearms—a centuries-old privilege. Return to Huanggang for the evening.
After breakfast, transfer back to Guiyang (3.5 hours). Your guide will escort you to the airport and assist with check-in for your departure flight home.
